In a fantastical smog-covered London where its inhabitants are blinded by convention, Molly is an inquisitive, intelligent school girl who imagines change. Her grandfather is the ageing inventor George Crockett whose magical sky-machine, the De-Smoggler, gathers dust in his workshop. Molly convinces him to collaborate on restoring the machine to rid the London skies of smog.

Composing Smog

The score uses 3 primary themes: The De-Smoggler Theme, a slow yearning melody; Molly’s Theme, an optimistic piano piece; and the despotic government is represented by a synthesised, low, ominous pulsing effect. All occur in various different guises during the film with the De-Smoggler theme appearing in fragments before it’s final presentation at the end of the film.

In the cue 'Escaping School', the themes are presented and developed simultaneously as the film cuts back and forth between the construction of the De-Smoggler, the teacher's realisation of what is happening and Molly's dangerous journey home. The score to 'Escaping School' can be found below.
